American Chronicles

This past Saturday, September 12, 25 Western Massachusetts residents, originally from around the world, became U.S. citizens during an emotional naturalization ceremony, held for the fourth straight year at Norman Rockwell Museum. The Honorable Daniel A. Ford, Massachusetts Superior Court Justice, administered the Oath of Allegiance to America’s newest citizens against the backdrop of Norman Rockwell's iconic "Four Freedoms" paintings.

Norman Rockwell Museum will present a book launch for writer Deborah Solomon’s biography, “American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell,” on Saturday, October 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. Join the noted interviewer and art critic for a look at her new, comprehensive biography of the acclaimed illustrator. As featured in the October 2013 issue of “Smithsonian Magazine,” “American Mirror” draws on a wealth of unpublished letters and documents from Norman Rockwell Museum’s archives to explore the relationship between the artist’s despairing personality and his genius for reflecting America’s brightest hopes.

Rockwell by Design

With its bucolic setting, Norman Rockwell Museum is well-accustomed to having its picture taken. However, this past Sunday we took things to whole other level, welcoming a full-blown, fashion photo shoot.

We Will Never Forget

The end of the summer has brought much cause for reflection here at Norman Rockwell Museum— important milestones, the passing of former colleagues and friends, and devastating storms, which have forced our neighbors to rebuild and start again. We would be remiss in not also reflecting on the tragic events that took place ten years ago, on September 11, 2001. A decade later our nation still struggles to find peace and solace from the events that unfolded on that otherwise clear, late summer day.

Norman Rockwell in the 1940s: A View of the American Homefront

I suddenly remembered how Jim Edgerton had stood up in a town meeting and said something that everybody else disagreed with. But they had let him have his say. No one had shouted him down. My gosh, I thought, that’s it. There it is. Freedom of Speech. I’ll illustrate the Four Freedoms using my Vermont neighbors as models.

Imprinted: Illustrating Race

Opening June 11, 2022, Imprinted: Illustrating Race examines the role of published images in shaping attitudes toward race and culture. More than 100 works of art and artifacts of widely circulated illustrated imagery will be on view, produced from the late eighteenth century to today, which have an impact on public perception about race in the United States. The exhibition will explore stereotypical racial representations that have been imprinted upon us through the mass publication of images. It culminates with the creative accomplishments of contemporary artists and publishers who have shifted the cultural narrative through the creation of positive, inclusive imagery emphasizing full agency and equity for all.
