The Cultural Legacy of War

Has war become an accepted response to conflict, and what cultural circumstances have established a climate for armed engagement? Join historian William H. Cohn, Ph.D., and other noted commentators in discussion about one of the most significant issues of our day. Four Freedoms Forums, inspired by Norman Rockwell's Four Freedoms paintings, encourage community discourse and explore aspects of our democracy in a rapidly changing world. A reception will follow. Nine Months at Gettysburg
Saturday, January 17, 5:30 p.m.

Travel back to 1863, the year of the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Battle of Gettysburg. Historian Howard Coffin will explain how Vermont's Second Brigade changed the tide of the Civil War, and discover its contributions at Pickett's Charge during the battle of Gettysburg. Explore President Lincoln's admiration for these untested soldiers, and how their efforts fit into the context of the Civil War. Free with Museum admission; program only $10; members free.
