Join arts and cultural historian Skylar Smith for this series of snappy virtual art experiences exploring the social, cultural, and material underpinnings of classic illustrations, which are re-contextualized for today’s times. The continuity and evolution of American identity, branding, politics, women’s rights, and gender identity is explored with humor, wit, and a deep dive into the history and cultural context of the moment. Along the way, commentator Skylar Smith creates a series of drawings inspired by early- to mid-century illustrations and pairs them with new captions to provide a contemporary twist. Series 1 (Three Parts)
J.C. Leyendecker’s Arrow Collar Man

J.C. Leyendecker’s advertisements for Arrow Collars―detachable shirt collars manufactured by Cluett, Peaboy & Company of Troy, New York―were a sensation. Originally featured in a print campaign that ran from 1907-1931, the artist’s portrayals of the Arrow Collar Man were so popular that this fictional character, modeled after Leyendecker’s partner, Charles Beach, inspired fan mail and even proposals of marriage. This series features an analysis of these advertisements and of branding; a look at men’s fashion in popular culture; and evolving notions of masculinity and gender identity.

Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
