Program Overview:

Join us for this lively, in-depth exploration of the art, history, and cultural relevance of MAD—the long-running humor magazine and counter-culture touchstone that has attracted readers and spoken truth to power for more than seven decades. The evolution of MAD’s unique brand of subversive humor and its impact will be discussed by the illustrators, cartoonists, editors, writers, historians, and collectors whose deep knowledge of the subject and personal contributions have sustained the magazine’s notable legacy.

The program is organized by the Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies in conjunction with What, Me Worry? The Art and Humor of MAD Magazine at the Norman Rockwell Museum, on view until October 27, 2024.

Celebrate the U.S. premiere of Anita Kunz’s exhibition Anita Kunz: Original Sisters Portraits of Tenacity and Courage with the artist and a panel of her creative collaborators, including Writer/Designer Chip Kidd, and NRM Curator Jane Dini for a conversation entitled “Anita Kunz: The Art of Collaboration.” The discussion will explore Kunz’s motivations for embarking upon her the project during the pandemic and how it was shaped by her friendship and collaboration with other artists. The conversation will be followed by a reception; signed books will be available in the Museum Store.

Join award-winning illustrator Ryan Hartley Smith and NRM Chief Curator Stephanie Haboush Plunkett for lively talk about the art of cartoons and comics. The discussion will focus on the dramatic evolution of the field and the resulting changes in how cartooning is taught --from the introduction of the popular Famous Artists Cartoon Course, in 1956, to the diverse stylistic and storytelling approaches of our time. Hartley Smith will illuminate cartooning’s rich history and lead participants through hands-on exercises with cartoon art—no drawing experience required!

A writing workshop led by Jennifer Browdy, PhD with artist Anita Kunz 

Artist Anita Kunz described her series “Original Sisters: Portraits of Tenacity and Courage” as “a love story." It’s a thank you to women on whose shoulders I stand.” Following the artist’s lead, Jennifer Browdy will lead a writing workshop in honor of International Women’s Day, inviting participants to write letters of love and gratitude to women who have inspired them, whether historical figures such as those included in the exhibition, or personal “sheroes” who have had a positive impact on their lives.

Storytelling in music and art inspired by the art of Walter Wick

Back by popular demand, hip hop and theater artist Baba Israel and illustrator Louis Henry Mitchell will lead audience members on a musical and visual storytelling journey that helps shape the performance! Guests will be invited to play with vocal effects, trigger samples and synths, and learn how to beatbox as both the music and illustrations evolve in real-time. Baba and Louis will be joined by jazz and electronic woodwind artist Sean Nowell, Boston Symphony Orchestra percussionist Will Hudgins, and bassist Mary Ann McSweeney for this interactive adventure that celebrates our collective imagination!

In collaboration with Tanglewood Learning Institute.

It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that we are learning, speaking and gathering on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people, who are the indigenous peoples of this land on which the Norman Rockwell Museum was built. Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present as we commit to building a more inclusive and equitable space for all.
