War News, 1944 Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) Oil on canvas Intended as a cover for The Saturday Evening Post but never completed, War News pictures a restaurant counterman and his customers, including a Western Union boy, a clerk, and a deliveryman, gathering to listen to a radio report. Painted in January or February of 1944 about the proposed invasion of Normandy, Norman Rockwell intended to later paint in the headline of the January 17, 1944 Times Record on the newspaper lying on the counter. It would have read "Invasion Plans At France Possible," part of the full title, "Eisenhower Reports Invasion Plans Advanced; Blow at France Possible." Rockwell decided not to submit War News to the Post, perhaps because it was hard to convey what the men were hearing or to make the newspaper headline discernible. He instead created a second painting of a man charting war maneuvers.
