Norman Rockwell Museum To Screen Jarvis Rockwell Documentary

Stockbridge, MA, October 23, 2018—Norman Rockwell Museum will present a screening of Jarvis Rockwell, a recently completed documentary about Norman Rockwell’s eldest son, on Friday, November 9, starting at 5:30 p.m. Produced by Massachusetts filmmakers Rachel Victor and Loren S. Miller, the film traces the artistic journey of Jarvis Rockwell, exploring his complicated family life and passion for action figures, which have become essential symbolic elements in his work.

“At first, I fell in love with the visuals of his art,” recalls Victor, who discovered Jarvis Rockwell’s work during the display of his Maya pyramid of toys at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in 2001. “From twenty feet away his acrylic houses displaying odd gatherings are quite remarkable and aesthetically appealing. Upon closer inspection, the details reveal a less jolly side… darkness made visible, humans coping with monsters. Jarvis works on many levels.”

Jarvis Rockwell was produced with over 12 years of shooting by Victor and her crew, traveling 150 miles from eastern to western Massachusetts to visit several Rockwell homes, to five different states to cover installations and toy store shopping sprees. The final segment of the documentary takes place during Jarvis Rockwell’s 2013 retrospective of his work, featuring an on-site installation of Maya, at the Museum dedicated to his father in Stockbridge.

During the screening, the filmmakers will offer further commentary about the film, with a question and answer session and reception to follow.

The event is free for Museum members and children 18 and under, or included with regular Museum admission.
