Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Those interested in a preview of our new exhibition, J.C. Leyendecker and The Saturday Evening Post are in luck: you can now view examples of all Post covers the artist created for the magazine from 1899 to 1943, including 1922’s Irish Liberty (pictured here). The full exhibition, including original works created by the acclaimed illustrator and hero to Norman Rockwell, opens this Saturday, March 21, with a special opening talk and reception to be held from 4 to 6 p.m.

J.C. Leyendecker (1894-1951) illustrated more than 400 magazine covers for prominent trade and general interest publications, including The Post, for which he created 322 cover paintings—one more than Rockwell’s 321. Twenty years Rockwell’s senior, he was the artist most closely identified with the Post during the first decades of the twentieth century. J.C. Leyendecker and The Saturday Evening Post offers a rare glimpse of each of the artist’s eye-catching Post cover designs, made possible by Trustee William Hargreaves, whose generous donation of magazine tearsheets to the permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum forms the centerpiece of this exhibition, which celebrates the work of an exceptional visual communicator who continues to inspire.
