John Henry (2009)

Jerry Pinkney worked closely with author Julius Lester on several important works inspired by cultural narratives, including John Henry, a childhood favorite that offered the opportunity to “create an African American hero that would inspire all.” The importance of leading a well-lived life is a theme that emanates from this African American folk ballad, illuminated through artworks that convey the superior strength and inner goodness of the story’s main character.
