This past Sunday, February 3, 2013, was Norman Rockwell’s 119th birthday, and both press and public reminded us how relevant the artist’s work continues to be.
Norman Rockwell Museum Director/CEO Laurie Norton Moffatt was invited to be a guest on Fox News’ Fox & Friends Weekend show on Sunday, taking host Mike Jerrick through a tour of some of Rockwell’s most iconic works, which are part of the Museum’s permanent collection. You can view the clip here.
Next, CBS Sunday Morning presented a tribute to Norman Rockwell during the “Almanac” section of their broadcast. Focusing on the highlights of Rockwell’s career, the show also included a portion of the artist’s memorable appearance on the February 6, 1959 episode of Edward R. Murrow’s Person to Person, where the legendary broadcaster took viewers on a live tour through Stockbridge, ending up at Norman Rockwell’s home and studio.
Online, The Huffington Post provided the useful 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Great American Artist, which included a slideshow of rare photos and interesting facts (did you know that Rockwell’s breakthrough came in 1912 at age 18, when he produced an illustration for Carl H. Claudy’s “Tell Me Why: Stories about Mother Nature”?).
And finally, reminding us that Norman Rockwell has never really gone out of style, GQ presented an interview with fashion designer Michael Bastian, whose Fall 2013 Gant collection was inspired by Rockwell’s paintings. The clothing line has been in talks with Norman Rockwell Museum about visiting in the near future. Check out the entire Gant by Michael Bastian Fall 2013 collection here.
